EPISODE 20 OF

Hello lovelies,

Welcome to Episode 20 of the podcast.  This episode was originally going to be focused on what to do if you are learning to knit but evolved into what to do if you are teaching someone to knit!  There isn't a huge difference really - whether you are teaching someone or being taught so all of the points are relevant!

I've divided the 12 tips into practicalities and, I guess, 'being human' tips : )

7 practicalities

  1. People need time and space.  Don’t rush it and make sure the space is set up to aid the learn
  2. The right amount and the right type of kit
  3. Go back to basics and avoid embellishing
  4. Have a journey laid out.  You can download my checklist of key skills here.
  5. Practise first, then go to a pattern!  Have swatch patterns ready
  6. Reading patterns is a different skill to knitting
  7. Practise for yourself before you teach someone else

5 'Being Human' things to remember

  1. Learn what you take for granted.  Episode 15, the K is Silent, covers some of the knitting conventions that it is easy to forget as an experienced knitter
  2. Consider people’s level of tolerance for ‘failure’
  3. Don’t teach your biases
  4. Create a way forward for people without swamping them
  5. People have different abilities, be mindful of them and be gentle

Don’t let any of this put you off, you only need to be about 10% ahead of someone to show them how to do it!

People have been asking about when I will run Learn to Knit again.  Unfortunately I don't currently have a date for the live teaching of the course but I am hoping to have the class available to buy on it's own really soon!

Thank you so much for continuing to tune in.  Next week I'll be talking about what I'm planning to knit just as soon as my shoulder is back in action!

HEY, I'M MICHELLE!

I started Knit School and the Get Knit Done podcast because I met a lot of knitters who were nervous about taking the leap to more advanced patterns & techniques and I wanted to help knitters to feel that they CAN KNIT ANYTHING they want!  Knitting is definitely not rocket science and everyone can be an awesome knitter including you!
